I see an America whose rivers and valleys and lakes - hills and streams and plains - the mountains over our land and nature's wealth deep under the earth - are protected as the rightful heritage of all the people. - Franklin D. Roosevelt

Indian River Lagoon Greenway

The Indian River Land Trust has initiated planning for a greenway trail system along the Indian River Lagoon from south of the 17th Street Bridge to IRLT's 80-acre property behind McKee Botanical Garden. The project is focused on planning, development and management of a 2-3 mile Greenway along a series of private and public lands for walking, bicycling, viewing the lagoon and enjoying of our county's unique natural surroundings.

The project began in 2007 when IRLT staff first met with a citizens group to discuss the idea of the greenway along this part of the Indian River Lagoon. Discussions were also had with supportive county and state officials who own or manage various lands along the lagoon. IRLT staff began to develop the Greenway Plan beginning in August. The goal is to complete the plan by February 2009.

Once the plan is completed, IRLT will convene a Lagoon Greenway Advisory Committee to promote the Greenway and spearhead an effort to raise funding to construct the access points, trails and associated amenities.
