SPECIAL PLACES IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

We speak a lot about special places in our county. Yet many of us have rarely ventured forth to see them for ourselves. Following is a list of those that the Indian River Land Trust would like to suggest you visit. And along the way…who knows… maybe you'll discover some special places of your own.

  • Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
    20.5 miles of protected loggerhead nesting area between Wabasso Beach and Melbourne Beach


  • Captain Forster Hammock Preserve
    110 acres of nature trails off of Jungle Trail on the barrier island


  • Environmental Learning Center
    64-acre nature center dedicated to environmental education


  • Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area
    20,869 acres of protected Indian River County landscape. Provides a variety of recreational opportunities just 10 miles east of Yeehaw Junction


  • McKee Botanical Gardens
    18 acres of horticultural beauty and old Florida charm


  • North Sebastian Conservation Area
    407 acres of protected native landscape with boardwalks and trail systems for hiking


  • Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA)
    298 acres of trails through native habitat just north of Oslo Road on the east side of US 1


  • Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge
    Public trail system adjacent to north Jungle Trail with public boat access and kayak/canoe launch; observation area onto Pelican Island itself


  • Round Island South Conservation Area
    59-acre conservation area with trails in progress; excellent spot for kayaking


  • Sebastian Inlet State Park
    755 acres on the barrier island; surfing, fishing and camping are among the favorite activities here where the ocean meets the Lagoon


  • St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park
    35 square mile (22,000 acres) of protected Florida landscape just off of Rte. 512; home to over 50 protected species; with a full complement of facilities for camping, hiking, horseback riding and more
